2013 was such a banner year for mega-flops. It’s crazy to think that 47 Ronin, Lone Ranger, RIPD, and Giant Slayer all happened within the span of 12 months. Ouch.
What about Pacific Rim? Production Budget: $190 million, Marketing & Distribution: $175 million, Worldwide Gross: $411 million (including over $111 million from China). Doesn’t that make the list?
I would take that Hollywood Reporter marketing number with a serious grain of salt. Pacific Rim was a certainly a box office disappointment, but if Thomas Tull lost $100 million on the pic, it would be publicly known to his investors –just as his write downs on Blackhat and Seventh Son. That article was typical reactionary clickbate when a film opens to disappointing numbers stateside — it was written just as it opened in the US and weeks before most of its overseas rollout. Pacific Rim is the kind of underperformer that probably just about recouped its costs after worldwide homevid and cable sales.
Walking with Dinosaurs!

Escape From Planet Earth budget: 40 million box office: 74 million
And he never did.
Escape from plant Earth? The Smurfs 2?
The Smurfs 2 was a success. joke on Sony for calling it a dissapointment.
More movies to add:
– Walking With Dinosaurs ($80m budget, $126.5m gross)
– Machete Kills ($20m budget, $15m gross)
– Red 2 ($84m budget, $148.1m gross)
– After Earth ($130m budget, $243.8m gross)
– The Host ($40m budget, $63.3m gross)
– Stand Up Guys ($15m budget, $5.1m gross)
I removed The Host. The gross budget was $44m and after a large tax credit it was closer to $30m.
Machete Kills has already been posted.
Missed Red 2. I’ll get to it.
What about The Internship?
added. More 2013 titles will be added over the next few weeks.
Where’s The Counselor? Didn’t that flop hard
It tanked in the US, got a hateful D cinemascore, but made $71 million worldwide on a $25 million budget.
“Parker” as well. Budget of $35 million, total was $48.5 million.
What about Ron Howard’s Rush? Or did that break even or at leas not bomb as bad as ITHOTS
It didn’t do well in the states, but it made a solid $71,283,215 overseas.
why isnt After Earth on the list?
It’s the kind of underperformer that probably just about broke even after ancillary. But thankfully Nepotism: The Movie isn’t getting a franchise.
Don’t forget The Big Wedding! Budget: $35 million, Gross: $46 million.
