There are small things you can do to protect your home without breaking the bank.
Leave Your Lights On
An easy way to deter criminals is to make them believe that you’re home. Burglars are looking for a house with no one in it since it’s much easier to steal things when there’s no one around. Leaving a porch light on or even a living room lamp makes people believe that there’s someone home, even if you’re upstairs sleeping or are out for the night. The small increase in your electric bill is worth it if you don’t have to deal with replacing your stolen valuables.
Protect Your Entry Points
Shoring up the defenses on your entry points is another easy way to keep your home secure. Make sure you’re always locking your doors and latching your windows shut, especially if you live in a multi-story home. One careless mistake can result in letting a burglar in.
You may also consider investing in a secondary lock for your doors if you don’t have one already. A deadbolt or even a chain that you can secure when you’re in your home will give you an added peace of mind when you go to sleep at night.
Check the Hinges
Hinges are often forgotten when it comes to protecting your belongings. Many types of hinges can be tampered with, meaning thieves can get in without having to deal with the lock on your door. For most homes, the door hinges are on the inside, meaning you won’t have this problem. However, if you have something like an outdoor shed, the hinges are usually on the outer part of the door. Invest in some tamper-proof hinges to keep unwanted visitors out.
Motion Sensor Lights
Motion sensor lights are an underrated form of deterring people from breaking into your home. No one wants to be caught while they’re in the middle of a crime. The cover of darkness is their friend, and by taking that away, you’ll likely scare them off entirely. You don’t need cameras to accompany the lights because the threat of being seen is enough, though adding some cameras to your security system wouldn’t hurt.
Consider Getting a Camera
Security cameras are probably the first thing you think of when thinking of securing your home against intruders. You may also think they’re expensive. They aren’t. At least not all of them. There are a wide variety of security cameras on the market, ranging in price and usefulness for protecting your home. If you don’t have the money to invest in the top-of-the-line security cameras, that’s all right. Even an inexpensive camera will do the trick if it’s visible to the potential burglar.
Fake Cameras Work Too
Even the threat of cameras is often enough to deter thieves when it comes to them scouting out their next score. Why get close enough to determine if a camera is real if the house two doors down doesn’t have any cameras at all? If you don’t have the funds to get a working security camera, a fake one will work until you do.
