The budget for Trapped
was $30 million and Senator Entertainment fully financed and they also handled international sales to distributors.
Sony took on distribution duties in most markets when the film was in post-production. Trapped was first dated for August 23, 2002 but it was pushed back to September 20 and then it was buried by Sony.
After a few high profile kidnappings in the US, the kidnapping premise of the film was toxic to Sony and they tried to disguise the plot from its marketing. The studio then told the cast not to talk about or promote the movie and Sony slashed the marketing budget. The studio quietly released Trapped and also did not hold critics screenings.
It bowed against The Banger Sisters, Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever and The Four Feathers. Trapped was booked into 2,227 theaters and it predictably bombed, placing #10 for the weekend with a terrible $3,210,765. It sank 53.2% in its second frame to $1,502,880 and was pulled from release after only four weeks with $7,073,251. Sony would see back about $3.8 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, barely putting a dent in the modest P&A costs.
The film did not fare much better overseas and pulled in just $6,341,165. After a strong quarter of films, in a Sony financial report they cited the ‘disappointing U.S. box office performance of Stuart Little 2, Stealing Harvard and Trapped‘ as eating into their profits.
