The budget for Just Getting Started was $22 million.
Broad Green Pictures scooped up US rights and immediately dated Just Getting Started for the Labor Day weekend on August 25, 2017 — which was the same frame that the new upstart distributor saw modest success with their first wide release in 2015 A Walk in the Woods ($29.5 million), which also courted senior auds. In May 2017, Broad Green moved the picture from August 25 to November 22. On August 2, Broad Green shuttered their production department after being beset by numerous flops and laid off 15 of their 75 employees. The projects they had in development were sent back out onto the market and their only movie awaiting a release Just Getting Started was moved to December 8.
After Broad Green had botched the release for The Infiltrator, they wanted to focus on more broad commercial fare and began with Bad Santa 2, which was a box office loser and then hemorrhaged tens of millions of marketing money on the cheap horror dud Wish Upon. One month after Wish Upon opened, Broad Green began their layoffs and restructuring. Any hope for a cash infusion to the troubled company would be completely reliant on Just Getting Started.
Director Ron Shelton (Bull Durham, White Men Can’t Jump) who had not helmed a picture since his big budget fiasco Hollywood Homicide (2003), set the bar low with this project. Just Getting Started was not screened in advance for critics and the few reviews that posted were atrocious. The film bowed against the modestly wide expansion of The Disaster Artist and early tracking was pointing to a very soft $5 – $8 million opening weekend. Just Getting Started was dead on arrival with $3,201,459. The few auds that showed up, hated the movie and gave it a C cinemascore and it predictably sank 68.5% the following weekend to $1,008,113 and then promptly lost most of its theater count. The domestic run closed with just $6,069,605.
Just Getting Started was dumped overseas and landed a theatrical release in a handful of markets. Recorded offshore receipts are $1,564,417.
Looks like they released it just in time, what with the allegations against Morgan Freeman and all.
