Just two months after Mean Girls (2004) opened and created a brief window in time where Lindsay Lohan was a bankable A-lister, she landed a $7.5M payday to topline Just My Luck. New Regency financed for $28 million and FOX distributed worldwide. Lohan was reportedly an on set nightmare with a cocaine problem and the behind the scenes troubles and the box office failure of Just My Luck contributed to her quick career demise. The following summer, Lohan killed off her studio career when the embarrassment I Know Who Killed Me was released to dismal numbers.
Just My Luck was originally positioned for release on March 3, but FOX pushed it back to May 12 as counter-programming to Poseidon for younger femme auds. Just My Luck was booked in 2,541 theaters and received atrocious reviews. It came in far below expectations with $5,692,285 — placing #4 for the weekend led by holdover Mission: Impossible III. It saw a 40.5% decline in its second weekend to $3,384,371 and the domestic run closed with just $17,326,650.
Overseas, the film pulled in a soft $20.8 million with $3.9M from the UK as the highest gross. The worldwide cume was $38.1 million, which would leave FOX with about $20.9 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, which would not cover the expensive worldwide P&A spend or any of the budget.
