sabotage 2014
After Schwarzenegger’s stint in politics, CAA booked his big-screen comeback in three projects — The Last Stand, Escape Plan and Sabotage.  The question remained if audiences would still have an appetite for his movies and that was met with a big ‘NO.’  The budget for Sabotage was $35 million and it was financed by QED Intl and the company also handled worldwide pre-sales to distributors.  QED laid off 5 employees after Sabotage tanked at the worldwide box office.  This also was the worst performing Schwarzenegger picture since Red Sonja (1985).

Open Road Films (joint distribution between theater chains Regal and AMC) acquired rights for domestic distribution.  Sabotage was originally scheduled for release on April 11 but was pushed forward to March 28 as counter-programming to Noah.  The Schwarzenegger vehicle received mostly awful reviews and was tracking soft with opening estimates near $10 million.

It was dead on arrival with $5,272,444 — placing #7 for the frame led by Noah.  The pic sank 62.1% in its second session to $1,999,758 and promptly lost most of its theater count.  The domestic run closed with a terrible $10,508,518 — leaving Open Road in the red for a costly P&A spend and their unreported acquisition amount.

The film did miserable business overseas, grossing just $11.6 million across many distributors.  The few markets that rolled the film out after the spring 2014 release, sent Sabotage straight to video.  David Ayer who directed, saw some redemption with the QED financed Fury a few months later.
