The budget for Not Fade Away was $20 million and Paramount and Indian Paintbrush financed the big screen debut from The Sopranos creator David Chase.
Paramount Vantage distributed in the US and first scheduled the picture for October 19 and then moved the release to a platform rollout during a crowded end of the year market on December 21. The award hopeful was then scheduled to expand to over 500 locations on January 4, 2013.
Not Fade Away received positive, but lukewarm reviews and award buzz was non-existent. Paramount Vantage booked the film into 3 three locations the same frame as 3 other Paramount movies were released — Jack Reacher, The Guilt Trip and Cirque Du Soleil: Worlds Away.
Not Fade Away pulled in $19,182 with a not very promising $6,394 per screen average. Paramount Vantage expanded the picture in its second weekend to 19 theaters, where it made $54,795 with a poor $2,884 per screen average. Not Fade Away expanded to 565 theaters in its third weekend to a disastrous $270,088 with a $478 per screen average and then promptly lost most of its theater count. The movie closed after only 5 weeks with just $610,792.
Overseas, Not Fade Away was given a tiny theatrical release only in Turkey and cumed a mere $25k.
