The budget for Joyful Noise was $32 million and it was fully financed by Alcon Entertainment.  The picture was distributed stateside through Alcon’s output arrangement with Warner Bros — where Alcon paid for the P&A expenses and WB received a fee for use of their distribution resources.  Joyful Noise marked an unsuccessful return to the big screen by Dolly Parton, who had not toplined a picture since Straight Talk (1992).

Joyful Noise was dated for the MLK holiday frame on January 13, 2012 and along with traditional marketing, Alcon targeted the faith based crowds.  It bowed against Contraband, the 3D reissue of  Beauty and the Beast and the wide expansion of The Iron Lady.  Tracking was pointing to a 4-day holiday gross above $15M and reviews were mixed leaning negative.  It came in slightly below estimates at $13,802,308 (3-day cume: $11,225,190).  Attendance over-indexed in Florida, Mississippi and Texas.  Joyful Noise did not hold well and declined 47.3% to $5,917,437 the following weekend and fell 46.1% to $3,188,393 in its third session.  The domestic run closed with a disappointing $30,932,113.  Alcon would see returned about $16.9M after theaters take their percentage of the gross, plus a fee to WB — which would not cover P&A expenses and the theatrical receipts would not touch the budget.

Joyful Noise was dumped straight to video in almost every offshore market and a fleeting theatrical run in a few countries pulled in all of $225,801.
