The Weinstein Company financed The Longshots for $23 million through their Dimension Films banner and the American football themed film would be dependent on the domestic market, as football would have no appeal outside of the US. The Longshots was co-distributed by The Weinstein Company’s Dimension label and MGM and the family pic directed by Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst was tracking for a modest $7 million opening weekend. The pic was dead on arrival with $4,080,687 — placing #10 for the weekend led by holdover Tropic Thunder and new openers The House Bunny and Death Race. The Longshots opened slightly better than the box office dud The Rocker, which opened at #13. Even with a solid A cinemascore from audiences, the film ended its run with just $11,537,046. Weinstein/MGM would see back about $6.3 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, leaving much of the P&A costs in the red and the budget at a loss. The film saw a theatrical release in Italy, Portugal and parts of South Africa to a small total of $230,820. Recorded domestic home video sales were $10.9 million (less after resellers take their cut and manufacturing costs).
