The budget for The Longshots was
$23 million and The Weinstein Company financed through their Dimension Films banner.
This family picture was directed by Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst and it was his second feature after his indie The Education of Charlie Banks, though The Longshots was released theatrically first.
The film was dated for the slow end of summer frame on August 22 and the American football themed film would be dependent on the domestic market, as football would have no appeal outside of the states. The Longshots was co-distributed by The Weinstein Company’s Dimension label and MGM and was tracking for a modest $7 million opening weekend.
It bowed against The House Bunny, Death Race and The Rocker. Reviews were mixed and the movie was dead on arrival with $4,080,687 — placing #10 for the weekend led by the holdover Tropic Thunder. Even with a solid A cinemascore from audiences, it faded quickly and fell 43.4% to $2,310,498 in its second frame and the stateside run closed with only $11,537,046. Weinstein/MGM would see returned about $6.3 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, leaving much of the P&A costs in the red and the budget at a loss.
The Longshots saw a theatrical release in Italy, Portugal and parts of South Africa to a small total of $230,820.
