Screenwriter Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich) made her first and last big screen directing job with this formulaic romantic dramedy Catch And Release.  $25 million in financing came from Sony and Relativity Media, with Sony handling global distribution duties.  Relativity’s portion of the financing came from their Gun Hill I hedge fund — which wealthy outside investors poured in $600 million to co-finance 17 movies from Sony and Universal.  7 films were financial failures and Catch And Release was one of those.

Sony first dated Catch and Release for April 2006, but delayed the movie to the January 26, 2007 dumping ground, claiming they had too many movies to market.  Reviews were mostly negative and Catch And Release bowed against the godawful spoof Epic Movie, Smokin’ Aces (also co-financed by Relativity) and Blood and Chocolate.

Catch And Release was expected to pull in low double digits opening weekend, but it tanked with $7,658,898 — placing #5 for the weekend sadly led by Epic Movie.  The following weekend was the Superbowl and Because I Said So opened and took the majority of femme auds.  Catch And Release sank a huge 66.4% to $2,576,948 and quickly ended its domestic run with $15,539,051.  Sony would see returned about $8.5 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, which would not even cover 1/3 of the P&A spend or any of the budget.

Sony dumped Catch And Release straight to video in most overseas markets and a fleeting theatrical run in a few countries pulled in $619,436.
