all the king's men 2006
The budget for All The King’s Men was $56 million.  It was an equal co-financing arrangement between Sony and Relativity Media.  Relativity was operating a hedge fund called Gun Hill I, which invested into the slate of select Sony or Universal pics.  All The King’s Men was the biggest money loser of Gun Hill I, losing their entire $28 million investment on this flop.   Additional coin on Sony’s end came from the German tax shelter fund VIP Medienfonds.

Sony was worldwide distributor and All The King’s Men was first dated for December 16, 2005.  It was being touted as a major Oscar player in the 2005 awards circuit, but in late October it was pulled off the calendar.  The studio issued PR that the movie would not be finished in time and needed more editing and re-scoring, but buzz began to sour over the delay.  It was eventually dated for September 22, 2006 and once again Sony was pushing this as a major awards contender.

All The King’s Men premiered a few weeks early at the Toronto International Film Festival and critics eviscerated the picture.  Between the very public year long delay to salvage the film and awful reviews, All The King’s Men was a failed prestige picture that would appeal to neither arthouse crowds or mainstream auds.

It bowed against Jackass: Number Two, Jet Li’s Fearless and Flyboys.  Sony booked the movie into 1,514 theaters and it bombed with $3,672,366 — placing #7 for the weekend led by Jackass: Number Two.  It declined a huge 58% in its second frame to $1,543,633 and promptly lost most of its theater count.  The domestic run closed after only four weeks with $7,221,458.

The overseas release pulled in $2.2 million.  It’s German gross was a pitiful $56,320 and Italy posted the highest numbers with a poor $683,800 and it was dumped straight to video in Russia and half a dozen smaller markets.
