FOX picked up this lame Martin Lawrence vehicle after DreamWorks put Rebound into turnaround in late 2003. The picture was financed by FOX for $33.1 million and the studio shuffled its release date from April 8 to July 22, until they dumped Rebound as counter programming to War Of The Worlds on July 1. This throwaway family comedy received terrible reviews and with the dimming star wattage of Martin Lawrence, FOX had hoped to pull in a modest $10M over the 4-day holiday period.
After Martin Lawrence had scored his first major solo hit with Blue Streak (1999) and then landed a franchise with Big Momma’s House (2000), he toplined a series of flops — What’s the Worst That Could Happen? (2001), Black Knight (2001), National Security (2003) and then Rebound.
Rebound opened with a career low for Lawrence with $5,033,848 ($6,003,237 4-day gross) — placing #7 for the weekend led by War Of The Worlds. The film saw a modest 39.9% second weekend decline to $3,024,349 but then sank 57.2% in its third frame to $1,293,760 and promptly lost most of its theater count. Rebound closed with a dismal $16,809,014.
FOX released Rebound in Australia, Germany, Greece and Spain to all of $683,000 and dumped it straight to video in every other market. FOX would see back about $9.5 million of its worldwide cume after theaters take their percentage of the gross, which wouldn’t cover much of the P&A costs or any of the budget.
The girl in that picture with ML (Tara Correa-McMullen) was shot dead three months after the release 🙁
