The budget for Head In The Clouds was $20 million and it was financed by UK based Spice Factory, Montreal-based Remstar and the Barcelona based Manga Films had a minority share in the production costs.  The film was pre-sold by Arclight Films, which sold very well to distributors who ended up dumping this melodrama.  Head In The Clouds was Charlize Theron’s theatrical follow up project to her Oscar winning turn in Monster (2003).

Sony Pictures Classics picked up US rights and Head In The Clouds received poor reviews and had little commercial or arthouse traction.  It was booked into 10 theaters and pulled in $46,133 with a not very promising $4,613 per screen average.  Head In The Clouds expanded to 20 theaters in its second weekend with diminishing returns at $33,997 and expanded to 47 theaters in its third frame to $57,303.  Head In The Clouds never expanded beyond 47 theaters and closed out its run with only $398,278.

Overseas, the film pulled in just $3,112,327 across numerous distributors.  Manga saw a terrible gross of $216,551 in Spain.
