the statement 2003 box officeOne of the most expensive films ever made from mostly Canadian money, The Statement was financed for $27 million by Serendipity Point Films, two Canadian broadcast networks – Astral Television and Corus — and also received some financing from the UK based Company Pictures and France based Odessa Films.  Sony Pictures Classics came on board during development for US distribution rights and a few overseas territories.  Summit handled international sales to distributors, who mostly sent the The Statement straight to video.

Sony Pictures Classics opened the pic at a crowded end of the year marketplace as a potential awards hopeful, but the film received mixed to poor reviews.   It was booked into 7 theaters and pulled in a weak $37,220 with a $5,317 per screen average.  The Statement never expanded beyond 51 theaters and grossed just $765,637.  The film pulled in $779,427 from its minuscule overseas release and veteran director Norman Jewison has not directed another film.
