People I Know was fully financed by the global sales and distribution company Myriad Pictures for $22 million and during filming in April 2001, Miramax came onboard as US distributor. Myriad then brought the project to the 2001 Cannes Film Festival in May for international sales.
People I Know had scenes that took place at the World Trade Center and Miramax pulled the release of the Al Pacino vehicle after the September 11th attacks. The movie also took shots at an unnamed NYC mayor modeled off the ghoul Rudy Giuliani, which also gave Miramax pause. Scenes at the WTC were re-edited and Miramax then unsuccessfully tried to sell the film off to another distributor.
People I Know collected dust for almost two years before it was dumped with barely a sign that it even existed. Reviews were mixed and Miramax booked it into 5 theaters, where it pulled in just $34,211. The picture never expanded beyond 8 locations and closed its brief theatrical run with just $126,793.
The film was mostly dumped straight to video overseas throughout 2003 and 2004 and pulled in $5,572,241 across numerous distributors.
