Summer Catch was first being developed at FOX with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, but the project moved over to Warner Bros and became a Freddie Prinze Jr. vehicle.  The budget for Summer Catch was a modest $17 million.   Warner Bros distributed 26 movies in 2001, but wholly financed only two without a partner, the first Harry Potter installment and Summer Catch.  After a string of interchangeable Freddie Prinze Jr. duds, including the less expensive Head Over Heels in February 2001, Summer Catch was dated for the slow end of summer August 24 frame.  It opened in a market super saturated with comedic fare and against the comedies Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Bubble Boy, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion and the unintentional comedy Ghosts of Mars.

Like most Freddie Prinze Jr. movies, the reviews were atrocious and Warner Bros booked the teen pic into 2,335 theaters.  It pulled in $7,018,593 — placing #6 for the weekend led by the holdover comedies American Pie 2 and Rush Hour 2.  Summer Catch declined 42.9% to $4,008,190 in its second frame and 56% in its third frame to $1,762,463.  It faded from theaters with only $19,753,553.  Warner Bros would see returned about $10.8 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, far below their marketing expenses and leaving the budget in the red.

Warner Bros gave Summer Catch a fleeting theatrical release in Australia, where it grossed all of $18,894.  The studio sent the film straight to video or television in every offshore market.  This also marked the end of studio vehicles built around Freddie Prinze Jr.
