FOX and Columbia Pictures were in a bidding war over the spec script by Peter Gaulke and Gerry Swallow and FOX won the rights to this incest comedy for mid six figures. FOX financed Say It Isn’t So for just under $30 million and Bobby Farrelly and Peter Farrelly’s Conundrum Entertainment produced this misguided thing, along with two other features in 2001 — Osmosis Jones (for Warner Bros) and Shallow Hal (FOX).
FOX originally dated the pic for February 2, but pushed it back to March 23, where it opened against the comedies Heartbreakers and The Brothers. Say It Isn’t So received rock bottom reviews from critics and was booked in 1,974 theaters and pulled in a terrible $2,861,903 — it’s opening was about even with FOX’s last release one month earlier, the huge flop Monkeybone. Say It Isn’t So placed #10 for the slow weekend led by Heartbreakers. Audiences hated the film as much as critics and gave it a D+ cinemascore and it sank 64% in its second weekend to $1,031,442 and promptly lost most of its theater count. Say It Isn’t So closed its run after five weeks with just $5,520,393. FOX would see back about $3 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, barely putting a dent in their P&A expenses and covering none of the budget.
FOX did not do much in the way of an overseas release and the pic cumed $6.8 million from its offshore run. Say It Isn’t So and Monkeybone severely dented the fiscal quarter and it was expected that FOX wrote-down the entire production costs of both films.
