The budget for Riding In Cars With Boys
was $48 million and it was financed by Sony.
Director Penny Marshall moved her production company Parkway Productions out of Universal after four years and over to Sony, where she landed a three year first look deal and it would be the first time Parkway was back on the Sony lot since A League of Their Own in 1992. Parkway also took multiple projects that were put into turnaround at Universal over to Sony, but Riding In Cars With Boys was the only movie that went into production with Parkway at Sony.
The film was dated for October 19 against From Hell and The Last Castle and Sony expected the opening to be in the $12 million range. Riding In Cars With Boys was met with mixed to poor reviews and came in slightly under expectations with $10,404,652 — placing #2 behind From Hell. The Drew Barrymore vehicle declined 42.2% the following weekend to $6,011,394 and then saw a modest 32.5% third frame drop to $4,056,350. Riding In Cars With Boys ended its domestic run with $30,165,536. Sony would see back about $16.5 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, which would not even cover P&A expenses.
Sony did not do much with the title overseas and gave it a small rollout to all of $5.5 million. In the quarter financial report, Sony noted the “poor performance of Riding In Cars With Boys.“
