We normally do not do write-ups on lower budgeted fare like this, but we’ll make a special exception for the infamous Freddy Got Fingered.
Regency financed Freddy Got Fingered for a modest $15 million and FOX distributed this monstrosity. After director/co-writer and star Tom Green turned in his cut, about 30 minutes was excised from the movie after test screenings and what remained was one of the most critically reviled films in history. The commercial appeal of jacking off a horse and elephant on screen has not been put to the test again after Freddy Got Fingered.
Freddy Got Fingered opened on 4/20 (probably not a coincidence), in 2,271 theaters and bowed against the family pic Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles. That FOX decided to screen the movie for critics is as bizarre as the movie itself. Freddy Got Fingered pulled in a soft $7,098,459 — placing #5 for the weekend led by holdover Bridget Jones’s Diary. Audiences gave Freddy Got Fingered a terrible C- cinemascore and it sank 64.5% the following weekend to $2,522,946 and it quickly burned out with just $14,254,993. FOX would see back about $7.8 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, far below their P&A expenses.
FOX sent the film straight to video or television in almost every overseas market and the recorded offshore cume is just $78,259. Tom Green’s studio acting days ended the following year when he co-starred in the flop Stealing Harvard. Despite its ice cold reception and box office failure, Freddy Got Fingered sold decently enough on home video.
What about home video sales? Did the movie become a wash with those numbers?
