Domestic Disturbance was rushed into production, when studios were stockpiling movies because of the possibility of a looming WGA and SAG strike in 2001. Paramount financed this turkey for $53 million and had 75% exposure to the budget after selling off overseas rights to distributors. John Travolta was coming off a humiliating 2000, which saw the fiascos Battlefield Earth and Lucky Numbers take a toll on his bankability. Domestic Disturbance was dated for November 2 and opened against Monsters, Inc. and The One.
The movie received awful reviews and opened within its modest expectations at $14,033,112 — placing #3 for the weekend led by Monsters, Inc. Domestic Disturbance saw a decent 38.4% second weekend decline to $8,640,422 and continued to post modest weekly drops, but the domestic gross stalled at $45,246,095. Paramount would see returned about $24.8 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, which would almost cover P&A expenses, but leave their exposure to the budget in the red. For the broadcast rights, the studio packaged Domestic Disturbance with three other mid-level performers ‘Rat Race‘, ‘Zoolander‘ and ‘Hardball‘ and sold them to TBS, TNT and the WB for $26 million.
Domestic Disturbance was a total dud overseas and cumed a mere $9 million.
