Writer/director Lawrence Kasdan took his oddball Mumford project over to Disney and a greenlight was announced on January 27, 1998. Kasdan and Disney Studios Chairman Joe Roth had successfully collaborated earlier on Grand Canyon (1991), when Roth was Chairman at FOX. The budget for Mumford was $28 million and Disney fully financed.
Mumford was dated for September 24, 1999 and there was zero buzz. Reviews were mixed to lukewarm and it bowed against Double Jeopardy and Jakob the Liar. Mumford was booked into 1,452 theaters and posted a disastrous $1,851,291 — placing #9 for the weekend led by Double Jeopardy. Audiences gave the movie a poor C+ cinemascore and it sank 52% to $887,841 in its second frame and promptly lost most of its theater count. The domestic run closed with a terrible $4,555,459. Disney would see returned about $2.4M after theaters take their percentage of the gross — which barely covers the cost of striking release prints and the ad spend and budget would be all red ink.
Disney dumped Mumford straight to video in most overseas markets and no numbers are reported from its small offshore run. Disney’s studio division posted an $84 million loss in the quarter, because of the box office failures of The 13th Warrior, Mumford and Mystery Alaska.
