Krippendorf’s Tribe was financed by Disney for an unreported amount, but this mid-budgeted picture cost enough to offset Disney’s quarter earnings — which the mouse house took an unspecified, but huge loss on Deep Rising, Kundun and Krippendorf’s Tribe. There’s not much to write about when it comes to this moronic, racist junk — except that Disney expected Krippendorf’s Tribe to do poor business and did not do much in the way of a strong marketing push.
It was dated for February 27, 1998 and bowed against Dark City, Caught Up and Kissing A Fool. Reviews were abysmal and it predictably tanked with $3,316,377 — placing #7 for the weekend led by Titanic in its 11th weekend. Auds gave the movie a poor C+ cinemascore and it fell 51.3% to $1,616,203 the following weekend and sank 60% to $646,428 in its third session. The domestic run closed with just $7,571,115. Disney would see returned about $4.1M after theaters take their percentage of the gross — which would not even cover the modest P&A spend.
Overseas numbers are not available. It was sent straight to video in France.
Was this pretty much the end of Dreyfuss’s career?
