The gross budget for Out Of The Furnace was $31,837,061 and after a $4.4 million tax rebate from the state of Pennsylvania, the net budget came in at $27.4 million.  It was co-financed by Relativity Media and the newly formed Red Granite (infamous for using stolen funds from the Malaysian 1MDB scandal).    Red Granite purchased the international rights from Relativity for $16.5 million and handled pre-sales to overseas distributors, which kicked off at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.  Relativity would handle domestic distribution duties and reduced their exposure to the budget even further with a lucrative Netflix deal that paid out $3.435 million.

Out Of The Furnace was first dated for October 4, but the mini-major wanted to position the picture closer to the end of the year as a major awards player and re-dated it for a limited release on November 27 — and an expansion set for December 6.  Relativity abandoned the week long limited run and instead booked it into 4 theaters on Wednesday December 4 and expanded it two days later.

Despite their limited exposure to the budget, Relativity spent north of $20 million on P&A, but Out of the Furnace was a tough sell and a lukewarm response from critics did not help.  Out Of The Furnace was the only wide opener over the usually slow post-Thanksgiving frame and tracking was pointing to a soft $8 million weekend.  Christian Bale’s first performance after retiring from the Batman series was dead on arrival with $5,220,288 in 2,101 theaters — placing #3 for the weekend led by Frozen.  Audiences also gave the movie a terrible C+ cinemascore and it sank 53.5% in its second frame to $2,425,978 and promptly lost most of its theater count.  The domestic run closed with only $11,330,849.  Relativity would see returned about $6.3M after theaters take their percentage of the gross, leaving much of the P&A spend in the red.

The film produced awful numbers in every overseas market and grossed $4.1 million across numerous distributors.  Three weeks after Out Of The Furnace was released, Red Granite saw far better results with The Wolf Of Wall Street.
