There Be Dragons was budgeted at $36 million and 80% of the financing came from Spain-based Mount Santa Fe Espana and Mount Santa Fe in the US.  From operating in two different countries, Mount Santa Fe would recoup tax breaks from both countries.  Spain’s Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA) invested $1.4M.  Antena 3 Films and small investments from over 100 private sources would contribute to the remainder of the budget.  After the movie was already released in Spain and the US, Bleiberg Entertainment handled additional international sales to distributors, which kicked off at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival in May.

Veteran Director Roland Joffé’s (The Killing Fields) career hit the toilet after the 2007 torture porn flop Captivity and There Be Dragons was also savaged by critics.  There be no dragons in this movie.  Just a mess about Opus Dei.  After this, Joffé immediately went into production on the doomed The Lovers, which was beset by financing woes and was dumped straight to video in 2015 after years on the shelf.

Aurum Producciones acquired Spanish rights and the film did mediocre business bringing in $3 million in Spain.  Samuel Goldwyn picked up rights in the US and tried to appeal to the Christian marketplace.  It was booked into 259 theaters on May 6, 2011 and pulled in $705,537 with a weak $2,724 per screen average.  There Be Dragons sank 79.8% in its second frame to $142,288 and then promptly lost most of its theater count.  The US run closed after four weeks with just $1,069,334.

There Be Dragons was dumped direct to video in a handful of countries it found distribution and its $3.3M offshore cume was mostly comprised from the Spain box office.
