Sony financed this completely unnecessary remake of Straw Dogs (1971) through their Screen Gems label.  The gross budget for Straw Dogs was $27M and after a $5,729,454 tax rebate from Louisiana, the net budget was $21.2 million.

Filming completed in 2009 and this turkey was continually delayed until it was finally dated for Sept 16, 2011.  It bowed against Drive, I Don’t Know How She Does It and the 3D reissue of The Lion King.

Straw Dogs had little buzz going into release and the reviews were mixed to poor.  It was dead on arrival with $5,123,760 and the acclaimed film Drive siphoned off much of the limited audience for Straw Dogs.  Horrible word of mouth and a C cinemascore led to a huge 60% decline in its second frame to $2,051,333 and it was pulled out of release after 4 weeks with only $10,324,441.  Sony would see returned about $5.6 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, leaving most of the P&A expenses in the red and the budget at a loss.

Sony dumped the movie overseas and opened it theatrically in just a few countries to a dismal $929,380 and Straw Dogs went straight to video in most major markets.
