Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox StoryFinanced by Sony and Relativity for $35 million, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story was given a heavy marketing push over the end of year holiday frame, including an expensive countrywide tour with John C. Reilly.  Reilly performed live in large venues across numerous cities, in character as Cox with his band, the Hard Walkers, for the “Cox Across America Tour.”  Even after the pricey marketing push, Walk Hard was tracking poorly and was looking to pull in a small $6 million in its opening over the competitive christmas frame.  The film was dead on arrival, opening with a terrible $4,174,383 in 2,650 theaters — placing #9 for the weekend led by National Treasure: Book of Secrets.  Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story dipped only 7.7% over the New Year weekend to $3,853,916 but was pulled from release after only four weeks with $18,317,151.  Sony would see back about $10 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, leaving much of the ad spend in the red and the budget at a loss.  Comedies usually don’t travel well overseas and Sony released the film to poor showing everywhere.  Walk Hard opened wide in the UK in 296 theaters to an awful $470,837 placing 13th for the weekend and also closed after four weeks with $1,049,675.  The film also made a miserable $911,978 in Australia and cumed an overseas total of $2.2 million and went straight to video in most markets.  Walk Hard sold moderately well on home video, recording $17.8 million in sales.
