German based Constantin began development on DOA: Dead Or Alive in 2004 after the company saw success with another video game adaptation Resident Evil (2002) — whose director, Paul W.S. Anderson produced this garbage.  Constantin financed DOA: Dead Or Alive for $30 million and tapped the German tax shelter fund VIP Medienfonds 4 for additional coin.  The company mitigated their risk on this stinker from global pre-sales to to distributors.

DOA: Dead Or Alive was completed in 2005 and was set for a release in late 2006 in most global markets.  The Weinstein Company acquired US distribution rights in 2005 through their genre label Dimension and first set a September 8, 2006 release.  As the release date approached, the Weinsteins began to move the pic all over the calendar.

While the US release was bouncing from date to date, DOA: Dead or Alive began to flop in market after market.  Constantin distributed in Germany to a poor $508,715 and the overseas cume stalled at just $7 million across numerous distributors.

After DOA: Dead Or Alive tanked overseas, The Weinstein Co. eventually set a release for June 15, 2007 and gave the film the least amount of effort they were contractually obligated to give.  It was booked into only 505 theaters with blink and you miss it advertising and was not screened for critics.  DOA pulled in an awful $260,713 with a $516 per screen average — placing #18 for the weekend led by Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.  It was dropped from all but 98 theaters in its second weekend and fell a huge 91.9% to $21,029 and closed its brief run after three weeks with just $480,813.
