The Farrelly brothers wrote Stuck On You back in 1990 before their career kicked off with Dumb & Dumber in 1994.  Jim Carrey and Woody Allen were originally going to star as the twins, but the studio would not meet Allen’s asking price.  Years later, Will Smith was interested in the project and had the Farrelly brothers polish the script, but then he lost interest.

Two months before the release of There’s Something About Mary (but when it was testing very strong with preview audiences), FOX signed Bobby Farrelly & Peter Farrelly for a 3-year first look arrangement and Stuck On You was expected to be their follow up project.  The screenplay was then put on the backburner and the brothers attached themselves to a series of generic comedies that did little to bolster their stock — they directed Me, Myself & Irene (2000) and Shallow Hal (2001) for FOX and the live action segments in the box office fiasco Osmosis Jones (2001) for Warner Bros.  They also produced and had their names plastered all over the stinker Say It Isn’t So (2001) for FOX.

In 2002, the Farrellys were expected to move forward with their Three Stooges redo at Warner Bros, but Matt Damon had an opening in his schedule and Stuck On You was fast tracked to production.  FOX fully financed the picture for $55 million.  Filming began in mid-February 2003 and the movie was quickly cobbled together for release on December 12.

The studio had high hopes for the high concept comedy, positioning it as counter programming to more serious Oscar fare dominating the marketplace.  Instead, Stuck On You was lost amongst the prestige pics and giant holiday tentpole movies.  It bowed against Something’s Gotta Give and Love Don’t Cost a Thing and reviews were mixed to lukewarm.  Stuck On You opened with a very disappointing $9,411,055 — placing #3 for the weekend led by Something’s Gotta Give.  The movie had a 43.9% second frame decline to $5,284,023 and continued to post modest drops in attendance throughout the holiday sessions, but Stuck On You closed with a poor $33,832,741.

FOX saw the overseas receipts in line with the domestic turnout, with a soft $31,951,762 — bringing the worldwide total to $65.7 million.  FOX would see returned about $36.1 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, leaving much of the P&A costs in the red and the budget at a loss.  FOX pocketed $4M from broadcasting license fees to the TBS network.

  1. I really enjoyed this film. I loved the cast, felt it was a nice change of tone for Damon after Bourne. You could always try and decide for yourself 🙂
