beyond borders box officeBeyond Borders was originally going to be helmed by Oliver Stone, but he dropped out after a potential strike date would force the movie into production early and cause budget concerns for the difficult shoot.  Martin Campbell took over directing duties and Mandalay Pictures financed Beyond Borders for an estimated $35 million, with some financial assistance from the German tax shelter fund CP Medien, which had a $28,000 minimum investment for wealthy people looking for a large tax write-off.  Summit handled international sales, which would help limit Mandalay’s exposure to this flop.  The Angelina Jolie vehicle was the last domestic Mandalay release by Paramount, which had been housed at the studio since 1998.  The film opened in 1,798 theaters against Scary Movie 3 and Radio and received terrible reviews.  Beyond Borders placed outside the top 10 at #11 with a disastrous $2,076,402.  The pic had weak legs, falling 51.1% the following weekend to $1,016,184.  Beyond Borders lasted only five weeks in release with a total of just $4,430,101.  Paramount would see returned about $2.4 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, which would barely put a dent in the P&A spend.

After the miserable US numbers, UK and France distributor Pathé sent the film straight to video.  Beyond Borders grossed just $7,274,901 overseas across numerous distributors, with most of that number coming from a $4 million gross in Japan.  Despite partially being financed by German coin, the film pulled in just $147,568 in Germany.
